Magnesia Formwork, A Kind of New Formwork system
Magnesium is another metal material which is used for manufacturing formwork system. Magnesium is not directly used for manufacturing formwork and is used with the combination of Oxygen atoms which forms Magnesium Oxide, usually called Magnesia or MgO.
Magnesium oxide, more commonly called Magnesia, is a versatile mineral that when used as part of a cement mixture and cast into thin formwork panels under proper curing procedures and practices can be used in residential and commercial building construction.
Magnesium oxide boards or MgO boards are famous in some countries because of their multiple applications. MgO boards are available in required sizes and grades. Some versions are suitable for a wide range of general building uses and for applications that require fire resistance, mold and mildew control, as well as sound control applications and many other benefits. As an environmentally friendly building material, magnesia board has strength and resistance due to very strong bonds between magnesium and oxygen atoms that form magnesium oxide crystals (with the chemical formula MgO).
Using Magnesia formwork may have the following advantages:
1. High bearing capacity.
2. Lightweight and easy to handle.
3. Inflammable and water-resistance.
4. Environmental friendly formwork causes no harm to the environment.
While Magnesia formwork is not widely applied in construction projects due to it has the following disadvantages:
1. Skilled supervision is required for installation.
2. Instability. When Magnesia formwork meets wet concrete, the magnesium chloride in MgO boards’ surface may dissolve and cause corrosion to the reinforcement.
3. Magnesia formwork cannot sustain in humid conditions. They absorb moisture easily from the atmosphere so, they are also called crying boards.
