Is There a Difference between Galvanized and Galvalume Steel Coil?

Time:2019/03/20

People often confuse different concepts of Galvanized Steel Coil and Galvalume Steel Coil. But the truth is that they are not the same thing. Both types of steel coil have different features and properties.

On the one hand, galvalume steel coil consists of 55 percent aluminum and 45 percent zinc alloy. While galvanized steel coil comprises zinc coating only. This is the primary difference between galvanized steel coil and galvalume steel coil.

Galvanized Steel Coil

Different processes can be used for galvanizing steel, including hot-dip, pre-galvanization, and electro-galvanization. Regardless of the process, galvanization is used to protect steel from corrosion. In addition, galvanization does not alter the inherent properties of steel.

The protective zinc coating is a metallurgical structure, which can withstand harmful environmental elements. It is easy to apply and maintain.

Coupled with preventing corrosion, galvanized steel coil is strong and durable. With careful maintenance, it can last for 25 to 50 years.

Galvalume Steel Coil

Galvalume Steel Coil consists of aluminum, zinc alloy, and other elements. It is used in different types of products, including roofing.

Compared to the galvanized steel coil, the surface of the galvalume steel coil is more attractive. However, it is more expensive than galvanized steel coil.

Galvalume steel coil coating provides anodic protection. However, it comprises less zinc, which significantly reduces the anodic protection. When it comes to steel corrosion, galvalume steel coil does not perform as well as galvanized steel coil. If it is hit by corrosion, especially on rainy days, it will spread quickly.
