Differences between Aluminum and Stainless Steel

Aluminum and Stainless Steel are totally two different things. Stainless steel is a kind of alloy, while aluminum is a natural element. What’s the difference between aluminum and stainless steel? The points listed below may show you the answer.

 

#1 Strength and weight. As we all know that aluminum has a weaker strength than stainless steel. And in the same volume, aluminum is almost one-third of the weight of stainless steel.

 

#2 Workability. Aluminum is fairly soft and easier to cut and form. Stainless steel can be more difficult to work with due to its resistance to abrasion and forming.

 

#3 Thermal Conductivity. Aluminum has a much better thermal conductivity than stainless steel. It is the reason why aluminum is used for car radiators and air conditioning units. While stainless steel can be used at much higher temperatures than aluminum.

 

#4 Electrical Conductivity. Stainless steel is a really poor conductor compared to most metals. While aluminum is a very good conductor of electricity. Due to its high conductance, lightweight, and corrosion resistance, high-voltage overhead power lines are generally made of aluminum.

 

#5 Cost. Stainless steel is a kind of alloy of steel which combines iron, carbon, nickel, manganese, and copper. The manufacturing process of stainless steel needs more costs. While aluminum takes less time to produce, so aluminum is typically cheaper than stainless steel.
